- ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪ ✪Feline declawing is banned in over 37 countries and in several California cities. Although this surgery is legal throughout the rest of the United States and Canada, it remains controversial for both veterinarians and cat owners. One of the reasons behind the controversy is that many cat owners think of declawing as a “super manicure.” However, cats’ nails are deeply embedded into the bone, and declawing requires the amputation of the last joint in every toe. This painful surgery requires expert, extended pain management. Sadly, not all practitioners administer the required pain control medication following the procedure. Fortunately for our kitties, there are a growing number of veterinarians today who work hard to educate clients and the public about the physical and emotional risks involved in declawing surgery.
